History in Your Hands

On Wednesday 30th April, our school Archivist - Mrs Hesketh - came to show the Fourths some of the school artefacts that are kept in the school archive.
We were able to handle these precious artefacts and learn about their origin and history. It was an amazing final Classics lesson and was an excellent way to conclude our studies into the ancient world this year.
We were able to get a view into the past, and how old civilisations lived their lives. Some students had an especially good time saying, ‘It was a rare once in a lifetime experience’. This view was shared by students and teachers alike, who got a glimpse into the wonders of the school archives, and the wonders of the past. Some of the work we were assigned was to determine the age and purpose of the objects. The objects were extremely old, most dating to around the 1st century BCE but were surprisingly well maintained - for example, a statue of the Egyptian god Osiris.
Overall, it was a fascinating and enjoyable experience made possible due to the hard work of the teachers in the classics department, especially Ms Cebon who organised the event, Mr Bull who gave up his class to run it, and Mrs Hesketh who runs the school archive.
There are many more precious artefacts and texts available to students to explore if they decide to visit. I recommend it to everyone!
