Writes Tristan Greenaway, Deputy Head, Co-Curricular
The first game of the staff cricket season saw the might of the Trumpers take on the slightly mightier (retrospectively) Dillip鈥檚 XI. Bowling first, Head Porter Kev Sharrock opened the attack alongside Mr Champness (MFL), and a couple of early wickets gave the staff some hope of control in the game. Sid E. (L6th) added a touch of extra quality to proceedings, while his peer Theo S. even poached a surprising catch. Messrs Brennan (Geography), Farrar鈥態ell (History), Fowler (Head of Cricket Development), Willson (Head of D&T) and Greenaway (Head of Co鈥慍urricular) all played their part in allowing the opposition to accumulate an eye鈥憌atering 176鈥5 from 20 overs.
In reply, a start of 11鈥3 after four overs was far from ideal, with Mr Champness, Mr Fowler and Mr Brennan all falling to early鈥憇eason nerves and straight deliveries. The L6th formers proved an oasis of cricketing talent in the desert of Trumpers鈥 mediocrity, before Mr Greenaway (46 not out) and Mr Farrar鈥態ell (11 not out) provided the glossy finish (!) and moral victory the staff so craved. A final score of 150鈥5 represented a thumping defeat, but a strangely satisfying moral victory nonetheless.
Two games against the Longstops (parents), Berkhamsted staff, St John鈥檚 Prep staff and Chorleywood CC follow after half term, with a 100% record still鈥攔emarkably鈥攁bsolutely possible.
