Boys in the Third Form have been busy completing their entries for the Historical Fiction writing competition 鈥 a collaboration between the History and English department – based on their study of Anglo-Saxon England. The best entries demonstrated a balance between historical accuracy with聽creative storytelling聽to transport readers to another time and included a聽meticulously crafted setting聽with vivid details,聽believable characters who act according to their time,聽a plot that intertwines with real events, and a writing style that avoids modern anachronisms.聽The best stories created an聽immersive and authentic experience – both true to history and compelling as a story.

Huge聽congratulations聽to all our authors shortlisted for consideration, but the winner goes to聽Navan W.聽for his wonderful tale of how Soren the Monk was able to safeguard the Lindisfarne Gospels from the brutal Viking assault on the monastery in 793AD. The Lindisfarne Gospels are聽a richly illuminated Latin manuscript of the four Gospels, created around 700 AD in Northumberland, England. Believed to be the work of a single monk named Eadfrith, this masterpiece of Anglo-Saxon art features intricate, vibrant designs and is held at the British Library. We are very grateful to Soren (and to Navan) for rescuing it!
