Writes Amit K. (Divs)

On Thursday 26th June, pupils at Panglossia listened to a fascinating presentation by Viraaj V. (Divs), who explored the intriguing French expression L鈥橝ppel du Vide. Quite literally, 鈥渢he call of the void.鈥

Throughout his engaging presentation, Viraaj examined the curious phenomenon in which people experience sudden, seemingly irrational thoughts, such as the urge to step off a high ledge despite having no desire to do so. He explained how this unsettling feeling is not a sign that someone wishes to harm themselves, but rather a psychological response that demonstrates the brain鈥檚 instinct for self-preservation.

By combining French language with psychology and neuroscience, the talk showed how a simple expression can reveal deeper truths about human behaviour. Viraaj explained both the linguistic origins of the phrase and the scientific theories behind it, allowing the audience to appreciate how language often reflects complex ideas that are shared across cultures. The presentation was thought provoking from beginning to end and encouraged everyone to reflect on how the mind works in situations involving fear, risk and decision making. It was an excellent example of how French can be used to explore ideas far beyond grammar and vocabulary, making for a memorable Panglossia talk.
